East Norwich is a hamlet home in Oyster Bay named for Norwich, England. The post office requested the name change due to another town in New York had been granted the name of Norwich previously, thus the reason for East Norwich. The first land deeds in the area were in 1696. In 1826, the Methodist Society was formed and in 1834, the first Methodist church was constructed on land donated by James Vernon. The first post office came to East Norwich on June 26, 1846.
The schools in East Norwich are part of the Oyster Bay East Norwich Central School District offering 3 schools including Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School for grades Kindergarten through 2nd, James H. Vernon School for grades 3rd through 6th, and Oyster Bay High School for grades 7th through 12th. The area is home to a variety of restaurants, shops, and businesses. Muttontown Preserve in East Norwich is the most popular attraction offering visitors and residents miles of marked nature trails, trees, birds, wildflowers, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. This is the largest preserve on Long Island and one of the most beautiful locations.
